10 Day course
Monday, September 15, 2008 to Friday, September 26, 2008
(Code:TF080915)
In this class we'll teach you how to make a traditional frame and panel cabinet. We assume that you have significant experience with both hand tools and stationary machines. You should be able to shave with your chisel or plane blade and be very comfortable milling wood and cutting to consistent length on a table saw. You should also be able to cut both mortice & tenon joints and dovetails by hand.
We'll start by teaching you fundamentals of the design of a frame and panel cabinet working on some simple examples of the joinery. We'll look at techniques both using hand tools and cutting the joints (at least in part) by machine.
We'll then go through the steps of designing the piece. We'll give you some design requirements (constraints) so that making the cabinet during the course is a realistic goal.
We'll teach you how to make a traditional draw(er) that fits snugly; how to hang a door accurately.
We'll also cover how to finish the piece. We'll encourage you to use a finish that easy to apply and looks great.
There is no set materials charge for this course. You can bring your own lumber (please consult with us first) or get the lumber from Edensaw.
Please note: If you've not taken some of our basic skills classes we'll call you and chat to you about your woodworking experience.
