Relief carving: a sculpture where the carved form projects out from a flat background.  

 

In Dan's words:

"The goal of this course is to provide each student in traditional woodcarving processes and techniques. Students will be introduced to carving tools and equipment through a series of lectures and demonstrations as well as class exercises and projects. Emphasis will be placed on gaining skill and confidence using various types of carving tools and how each related to creating specific types of form. Students will learn how design and equip a carving area and the proper sharpening and maintenance of tools."
