Most of our courses address the hard skills of woodworking - tool techniques, sharpening, etc. This course addresses one of the core soft skills - Design. Design is probably the hardest skill to master - it takes a lot of practice to get designs and designing right.

This course will introduce you to furniture design. We'll cover basics like standards for size and height for different functions. We'll review classic proportions and styles. But then we'll dive into working on designs and making them.

One of the biggest hurdles when you start making furniture is knowing what the final project will look like when you've finished. We'll come up with a design for a simple piece, lay it out and then make it! Not in wood but in cardboard.

Making cardboard mockups is a very quick and very cheap way to find out if a design

works. Once the mockup is made you can tune the design and look of the piece.

A full size mockup can be put in place in your home and you can see directly how it relates to the room and other furniture.

We'll demonstrate simple techniques for adding subtle accents and changing lines.

One of the emphases in this class will be speed. It is very easy to procrastinate on design. So we'll do timed sketches, model building and lots of iterations. You won't have time to change your mind. This works well for artists - why shouldn't it work for furniture makers?
